Occasionally a patient presents with findings on an imaging study that show an abnormality involving the covering of the brain (aka: dura mater; dura). This may require the surgeon to obtain a sample of the dura so that the pathologist can examine the tissue under a microscope to determine if the tissue is diseased. This procedure is of very low risk. Recovery time is approximately 5-7 days and there are no subsequent limitations to activity. Any further treatment will depend upon what the pathologist determines is wrong with the tissue.
