IBF is used to treat back pain caused by degenerative disc disease. The procedure can be performed either from the front or back of the spine. In either approach, the damaged disc is partially removed and temporary spacers are inserted into the empty disc space. This realigns the vertebral bones and lifts pressure from the pinched nerve roots. The surgeon then replaces the spacers one at a time with threaded metal cages packed with bone graft. The bone graft material will grow through and around the implants, forming a bridge that connects the vertebral bodies, called a fusion.
